The Travels of IBN BATTUTA in the Near East, Asia and Africa (1325-1354)

  • The most famous traveler of the 14th century.
  • Holy tourism~a medieval traveler(after Marco polo)
  • pilgrimages~journeys with a religious motivation~were arguably the first form of organized mass tourism.
  • visited islamic/muslim empires based on his journals/diary.
  • Marco polo or Romans expeditions~a cliche. Ibn Battuta is the forgotten traveller.
  • sea voyages: Muslim completely dominated the maritime activity of the Red sea, The Arabian sea,the indian Ocean,Chinese waters and South East Asia.
  • Started his travels, from Tangier(North Africa)14th June 1325,at the age of 22,to Makkah for Hajj.
  • Ibn Battutah 24 year journey covered almost the entire known world.
